25 Aug Letter from CEO Kevin Payne to US Club Soccer parents: Players First updates and Player Health & Safety initiatives
Aug. 25, 2016
Dear US Club Soccer member,
Thanks very much for your continuing support of US Club Soccer, your club and our shared mission to create a wonderful soccer experience for your child. We hope you’re having a great summer!
I wanted to make you aware of recent developments in our groundbreaking Players First initiative, which aims to identify those clubs that have adopted a holistic approach to creating the best possible experience for parents and their kids.
Players First provides support to clubs in five key areas: Club Development, Coaching Development, Player Development, Parent Engagement & Education and Player Health & Safety.
We’ve had a busy summer, with our fourth LaLiga Formation Methodology course concluding recently in Chicago. So far, about 600 coaches have gone through this acclaimed educational program to learn how the best development program in the world trains players to be the best!
We’ve also launched our new Sideline Sports Doc program, along with our enhanced coaching and staff background checks.
Sideline Sports Doc is an online and digital course aimed at helping coaches better recognize the severity of injuries and take the correct steps when they occur.
Beginning July 1, every coach or key staff member who registers with US Club Soccer will now have to pass our best-in-class background check system, which is far more rigorous than the previous youth sports standard. While many youth soccer organizations have tried to cut costs by employing lesser standards for such checks, we believe Player Health & Safety is our first and most important responsibility. To act otherwise would be irresponsible.
More details are available below. I encourage you to visit usclubsoccer.org/playersfirst for even more information about how we are trying to provide the best possible environment for each and every player to achieve his or her goals.
Thanks again for your commitment, and be sure to ask if your child is playing for a Players First Club!
CEO, US Club Soccer
Sideline Sports Doc:
Sideline Sports Doc (SSD) is a customized, scalable training program that includes a six-chapter online course, as well as downloadable .pdf/e-book and .mp3 products.
The chapters are: 1) The SAFE Method – initial evaluation of an on-field injury, 2) Ankle and foot injuries, 3) Concussion, 4) Fractures, 5) Heat illness, and 6) Knee injuries. It will be kept up-to-date on medical mandates, response protocols and best practices.
The course takes approximately an hour to complete, but it does not need to be done all at once. Users may save their progress and pick-up where they left off at a later time.
This course must be completed within the 120 days preceding submission of one’s background screening application. Users receive a confirmation number when the course is complete, which must then be entered into the corresponding background screening application.
More stringent background screening:
Beyond a variety of national sources, our new level of screening includes a direct county/state of residence criminal record search for all counties in which an individual has lived within the past seven years, regardless of whether any “hits” appear on the national database searches.
An additional benefit is the constant monitoring program, which notifies US Club Soccer of changes to an individual’s national criminal history during the time between full background screenings.
This new standard exceeds FCRA requirements.
In conjunction with a higher standard, the screening is conducted by NAPBS-accredited firms via SportsEngine’s Verify platform.
