Brandi Chastain, internationally known for her iconic penalty kick that clinched the 1999 Women’s World Cup title for the United States, discusses the challenge of coaching her own child. Chastain, who coaches her son, said she frequently asks herself: “Am I the mom or the coach right now?”

She even admits that it’s tempting to give her son extra chances during drills, because she wants him to be successful. Her son has also adjusted to new roles and boundaries. While they’ll always have a mother-son relationship, it’s important to remember that at practices and games, it’s also a coach-player relationship.
