17 Jan US Club Soccer, Players First make impact at 2017 NSCAA Convention

LOS ANGELES, Calif. | US Club Soccer hosted a classroom session, autograph signing and field session during the 2017 NSCAA Convention, Jan. 12-14. Additionally, its large Players First-themed booth facilitated new and existing relationships with coaches around the country, in what the NSCAA has declared the second-most attended convention in history.

The NSCAA has not published attendance figures, but the event is labeled as the “World’s Largest Annual Gathering of Soccer Coaches” with historically about 4,000 coaches and more than 10,000 attendees per convention.

The classroom session, Jan. 12, featured Real Madrid legend and LaLiga Country Manager, Raúl González Blanco, and LaLiga Formation Methodology experts, Gari Fullaondo and Hugo Blanco.

“I believe in this country, and I believe in you,” Raúl said to a standing-room only crowd of coaches during Thursday’s classroom session. “The key word is passion.”

Joining Raúl on stage were Fullaondo and Blanco to deliver an overview of LaLiga Formation Methodology and a brief discussion of “Player Formation and Tactical Periodization.”

“We need methodology to account for all levels of our players,” Fullaondo said. The next LaLiga Formation Methodology course is Feb. 3-5 in La Jolla, Calif.

Thursday night, when the exhibit hall in the Los Angeles Convention Center first opened its doors to attendees, Raúl signed autographs, took photos and even spoke with distant fans via FaceTime at the US Club Soccer booth.

Then, on Saturday, Fullaondo and Blanco led a field session, titled “Teaching Progression – Activities for Developing Decision Makers.” A full audience of coaches watched the LaLiga experts instruct players on using space properly, how to maintain possession effectively and other tactical and technical skills.

It was a one-hour glimpse into a 22-hour LaLiga Formation Methodology course. In 2015, five courses were held, educating about 750 coaches from 250 clubs/organizations.

LaLiga signed a long-term technical partnership with US Club Soccer at the Players First launch event in August 2015 at Nike World Headquarters. The expansive partnership provides US Club Soccer members with curriculum to enhance the daily youth soccer training environment for better development of all players and coaches.
