19 Jan US Club Soccer Board of Directors Chairman Phil Wright honored at 2017 NSCAA Convention
LOS ANGELES, Calif. | US Club Soccer Board of Directors Chairman Phil Wright joined elite company this past Friday night during the NSCAA Awards Banquet at the 2017 NSCAA Convention, as he and five others were presented Letters of Commendation for their contributions and service to the sport.
Bruce Arena, Marti Coan, Mike Coven, John Daly and Sigi Schmid were the other Letters of Commendation recipients during the prestigious banquet.
“I am honored and humbled to have received a Letter of Commendation from the NSCAA,” Wright said. “This award reflects the work of many people who have helped me throughout my career. To be honored for my service, impact and positive influence on the game I love and the Association representing the profession I am proud to be a part of is truly special.”
Wright has served US Club Soccer as its Chairman of the Board of Directors since 2003. The former President and Director of Coaching of San Juan Soccer Club is a U.S. Soccer Federation National ‘A’ License holder and was the recipient of the 1997 NSCAA National Youth Coach of the Year (competitive boys category). He holds the NSCAA Premier Badge.
Wright is a lawyer and Assistant City Manager of Administrative Services with the City of West Sacramento. He has returned to his passion of coaching to guide the San Juan Soccer Club’s U-14 academy team.
Wright played collegiately for Stanford University, where he earned his B.A. He is tied for sixth in Stanford men’s soccer history for most goals scored in a game, after recording a hat trick against Fresno Pacific on Oct. 17, 1975.
Wright went on to earn his J.D. at Santa Clara University. He played professionally for the old North American Soccer League’s Portland Timbers. Wright returned to Stanford and Santa Clara for a pair of five-year coaching stints, in which he started both women’s soccer programs.
When Wright was re-appointed by the Board of Directors to his role as Chairman in April 2015, he said: “I strongly believe our best days are ahead of us.”
