Julie Foudy won two FIFA Women’s World Cup championships and two Olympic gold medals, highlighted the media-coined “golden era” of U.S. women’s soccer, was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame and received the FIFA Fair Play Award – just some of the accomplishments during the American soccer legend’s playing career. And that’s not including her post-retirement parade of achievements.

Yet, after 272 appearances and 45 goals with the U.S. Soccer women’s national team, Foudy still vividly remembers two soccer dads who coached her youth team.

“Mr. McIntyre and Mr. Hutchinson were my first two coaches with the Mighty Green Machine. Go, Soccerettes! That was really our name,” Foudy says, laughing. “They made it fun. I don’t ever remember growing up thinking, ‘I don’t want to go to practice today.’

“You want to create an environment that really is something the kids are super pumped about. And there’s joy and there’s laughter. I get it’s competitive. But I get frustrated, because I think lost in the noise of winning, is that the fact that you can win and have fun. There should be laughter. My greatest memories from the national team are constant laughter. That’s all we did. That’s why they couldn’t kick us off in the end. We just had so much fun. And that’s what I want to see when young kids play sports.”

Foudy spoke with US Club Soccer before Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Youth Sports Awards, April 22 in Palo Alto, Calif. Foudy is a member of the PCA National Advisory Board.

Positive Coaching Alliance is helping to advance the Players First pillars of Coaching Development, Parent Engagement & Education and Player Health & Safety.
