John O’Sullivan, who founded the Changing the Game Project in 2012 after two decades as a soccer player and coach, explains how parents can be supportive from the sidelines without yelling.

It is difficult for kids to hear instruction in the run of play even if its from the coach, so when parents chime in from the sidelines, it doesn’t help kids learn, it hurts them.

O’Sullivan asked thousands of student-athletes what they’d prefer to hear from parents, and they answered unanimously: “nothing.” When asked the same question, parents already knew that answer, yet they still proceed to yell and scream at games.
