24 Aug Monterrey midfielder, id2 alumnus Jonathan Gonzalez achieving ‘significant’ success
Jonathan Gonzalez, 18, is garnering attention not only within Liga MX, but within U.S. Soccer national team circles. The Monterrey midfielder and member of the 2013 id2 National Selection International Tour to Spain is rapidly rising through the professional circuit, according to an ESPN FC article (excerpt below):
Gonzalez has started three of the team’s five Liga MX games — including 90 minutes in Monterrey’s 4-1 victory over champion Chivas — being benched only last Saturday against Leon because of a minor injury picked up in training the day before.
What he has achieved is significant, especially given the context. Rayados have assembled one of the most expensive squads on the continent and are currently top of Liga MX after five rounds of matches in the 2017 Apertura. Aside from that, it is a team that doesn’t regularly field youth players, especially in Liga MX.
As a youth player, Gonzalez honed his skills with Atletico Santa Rosa before moving to Monterrey. Four years ago, he was part of a strong id2 National Selection team that played youth academy teams from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Girona FC. That group now boasts several young professionals.
Established in 2004, US Club Soccer’s id2 Program provides an opportunity for the country’s elite youth soccer players to be identified and developed, and scouted for inclusion in U.S. Soccer’s National Team programs. The id2 Program is an Olympic Development Program approved by the United States Olympic Committee and the U.S. Soccer Federation.
