06 Jun 2018 Ohio State Cup continues growth with new tiers of competition, qualifies 21 champions to National Cup XVII Midwest Regional qualifiers
WILOUGHBY, Ohio | Twenty-one teams from 14 clubs secured 2018 Ohio State Cup championships this past weekend, and each division winner has earned the opportunity to compete in the National Cup XVII Midwest Regional.
The 2018 Ohio State Cup semifinals and final were held June 2-3 at Lost Nation Sports Park in Willoughby, after the preliminary matches were played May 14-20 in Willoughby and Seville. One major change to this year’s tournament saw two tiers of competitions, the Super Group and Premier division, which allowed for more participants and more balanced competition.
From the 180 teams that entered the competition, CSA, Cleveland Cobras and Ohio Strikers United each clinched three division titles, while Columbus East and Everest SC were the only other clubs to win multiple championships. The Ohio State Cup was presented by Alliance Premier Soccer League.
Here are the 2018 Ohio State Cup winners:
“We could not be happier with the results of this year’s Ohio State Cup,” said Ed Bernstein, the Ohio State Cup tournament director. “This was our first year of having both a Super Group division as well as a Premier division. This allowed more teams to participate and compete at their proper level. We were pleased to crown 30 new Ohio State Cup champions, of which 21 teams will be advancing to the Midwest Regional.”
The Ohio State Cup winners will now quickly get back to action, as the National Cup XVII Midwest Regional kicks off, June 22-25 in Waukegan and Libertyville, Ill. The champions of that Regional will then move on to the National Cup XVII Finals, July 20-24 in Aurora, Colo.
