18 Jul Fit For 90 founder John Cone delivers seminar on recovery during Girls NPL Finals in Colorado
The seminar was open to coaches, parents and players – another step towards US Club Soccer facilitating the safest environment in youth soccer. Video clips from the seminar will be published soon.
Cone shared insight he gained from a lengthy career of working with all levels of the sport, including details on different recovery modalities, logistical challenges when traveling and how to problem-solve a challenging tournament schedule.
“Optimizing performance and injury resistance during tournament weekends is both challenging and fundamental to team and individual success,” Cone said. “Understanding how to optimize recovery between matches, what to prioritize in your schedule is a challenge for every coach and player.”
Ricky Clarke, the Development Academy director for Southern Soccer Academy (SSA), brought his entire roster of his club’s 14-U girls team, including parents, to the seminar. Just three days later, SSA went on to become the only club to win multiple titles during the 2018 Girls NPL Finals, clinching the 13-U and 14-U divisions.
“When you come to these events, not only it is important about the way that you play – the systems that you play – but like John said in his presentation, it’s also extremely important in how you take care of your body, and how you recover when you play at such a high intensity,” Clarke said. “So I thought it was really important that our team heard from John today and the information that he gave them.”

During the Q&A portion of the seminar, SSA parents weren’t shy about asking questions that ranged from ice baths to nutrition. Given the age of the SSA ’04 Elite squad, that was a bonus for Clarke.
“I think what’s important is that within your coaching methodology, there is always a three-way process between the coach, the player and the parent,” Clarke added. “If you’re just constantly communicating with the player and you don’t bring that parent into the triangle, it becomes difficult. So, it helps when the parents also understand from a theory point of view, as well as the players and the coach, and today was really important that all of us are were here, so we buy into understanding how to recover after such intense games.
“One of the cool things about the presentation was that John provided specific examples, even provided a day breakdown from when you get up in in the morning to when you go to sleep at night. Those tiny pieces of detail can make a big difference when you’re coming towards the end of a tough week, and you’re needing to perform and get that extra edge to get into the next round, to get into a semifinal and to get into a final.”
