Positive Coaching Alliance: The worst part of youth sports for kids is the car ride home

Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Players First partner Positive Coaching Alliance, as part of Parent Engagement & Education week. It first appeared in the Dev Zone.

John O’Sullivan, founder of Changing the Game Project, says that when people are asked what their worst memory is about youth sports, most respond that it is the ride home from the game. Kids are physically and emotionally exhausted, yet parents want to make the car ride home a “teachable moment,” O’Sullivan told Positive Coaching Alliance.

He advises that parents should let their child drive the conversation. If they want to talk about the game, let them talk, but do not be the one forcing the conversation. To learn more about how to manage this conversation and become a Second-Goal Parent with Positive Coaching Alliance, please check out their resources and online courses here.
