Four ways to prepare for lightning (via Go4)

Consult with your athletic trainer before games, practices, camps, and tournaments to make sure you have a venue specific lightning safety plan. Below are four things that will help you prepare for lightning at your event.

A weather monitoring system: Real-time weather monitoring tools such as WeatherSentry or Perry Weather show you the distance between you (your phone) and the closest lightning strikes. As a general rule, cease play immediately if strikes occur within six miles of your field. For larger venues, stop play when strikes occur 10 miles away, so that you have adequate time to communicate and get participants into designated safe shelters.

Designated safe shelters: Identify sturdy, enclosed buildings to shelter in during a storm. Dugouts, under bleachers or under sideline benches are not sufficient. There is no safe spot outdoors to wait out lightning.

Rain/clouds are not the indicator: Keep in mind, even if there are no clouds or rain in sight, you need to be aware of where strikes are occurring. Lightning can travel up to several miles away from rain or storm clouds.

Seek immediate medical attention: If someone is struck by lightning at your event, they need immediate medical attention. The person will not be carrying an electrical charge, but their heart and breathing may have stopped. Your athletic trainer should begin care (including potentially utilizing the AED) while you call 911.
