West Coast talent identified at id2 Training Camp in California

DAVIS, Calif. (April 26, 2022) – The first id2 Training Camp in over a year was held April 22-24 at Davis Legacy Soccer Club in Davis, California. The camp served as the penultimate event of the age group cycle targeting 2008 boys and 2007 girls. A total of 61 athletes were selected to attend, with 35 boys and 26 girls representing 35 clubs from the West Coast and Hawaii. Training schedules were comprised of daily field and classroom sessions, including two on-field sessions on Friday and Saturday, along with multiple presentations from id2 Program directors and coaches.

Ahead of playing full scrimmages on Sunday morning, the athletes were coached through various tactical and technical exercises, such as building out of the back and attacking team shape.

They also received presentations from their coaches on topics ranging from keeping a calm psyche to defensive and attacking principles.

id2 boys director Gerry McKeown and girls director Tricia Taliaferro implemented id2 curriculum alongside a collection of the country’s best youth coaches. The boys were coached by: Matt Bernard (San Juan SC), Ian Mork (Hawaii Soccer Federation), and Benjamin Ziemer (NorCal Premier), and The girls were led by: Stuart Hilton (Sting SC), Madison Holland (SoCal), Zeca Neto (San Juan SC), and David Roberston (Davis Legacy SC).  US Club Soccer senior leadership members – Mike Cullina (CEO), Leo Garcia (VP of Competitions) and Alexandra Rieben (VP of Programs & Partnerships) – were also in attendance to oversee the program’s first training camp in more than a year due to COVID-19-related safety protocols.

The current age group cycle of ’08 boys and ’07 girls officially concludes this weekend in Richmond, Virginia. That camp acts as the East Coast equivalent to this West Coast-based camp.

Established in 2004, US Club Soccer’s id2 Program provides an opportunity for the country’s elite youth soccer players to be identified and developed and scouted for inclusion in U.S. Soccer’s National Team programs. The id2 Program is an Olympic Development Program approved by the United States Olympic Committee and the U.S. Soccer Federation. There is no cost for players to participate or be scouted, and all meals, lodging and gear are provided by US Club Soccer and Nike.
